Narkanda, Simla Hills

Narkanda

We planned a trip to Narkanda on 4-Dec-2018. Narkanda is about 65 KM from Simla. We booked a car from our hotel – Radisson Jazz, Simla. It was a Toyota Innova. After breakfast, we started for Narkanda at about 10:00 AM. It took quite a while to leave Simla city as there was very heavy traffic. The roads in Simla are rather narrow and thus very frequently vehicles from opposite directions block each other and cause traffic jams.

On the way to Narkanda, we stopped at Kufri, but that is another post. From Kufri, we drove non-stop to reach Narkanda town at about 1:30 PM. We stopped at the Narkanda town to have lunch. We ate Kadi-Chawal at a restaurant. As it was very cold here, we also had a cup of Coffee. The Coffee made in these hills is very good.

The hotel where we had lunch was in the Narkanda town center. There was no toilets in the hotel. However, there were Public Toilets close by. The Public Toilets were very well maintained. And there is no charge for using the Public Toilets.

After lunch, we started towards a Kali Temple on top of the hills. The road here is very narrow. It becomes a big problem when another vehicle came from the other side. Our driver had to sometimes move in reverse so that there was enough space for the other vehicle to pass. The same was done by the other vehicles as well depending on how the 2 vehicles were placed on the road.

After climbing quite a bit, we could spot some snow on the hills. We kept climbing. We must have climbed some 10 KM, when our driver told us that we could not go any further as there was a thick layer of snow on the road. So, we stopped the car and got down to experience the snow.

From here we could see the Shivalik Range very clearly. Fortunately for us, the sky was very clear.

Deepshree was seeing Snow for the first time in India. She had experiences snow in Mount Olympus in Cyprus before this. She was thrilled.

There was thick layer of snow on the mountain. We found some people on the snow. So, I started looking for how they got there.

Soon I found the path. Seeing the path, Deepshree decided to stay on the top. Ranoo was also too afraid to climb down and decided to stay on top. I took some courage and decided to climb down. The initial climb down was very difficult. After getting through that I was on a smooth path.

In the meantime, another family with 2 ladies and 2 children started climbing down the same path. Seeing this, Ranoo joined the group and climbed down along with them.

Ranoo and I spent about 30 minutes on the snow. Then we started back up. This was a bit difficult for me. However, it was extremely difficult for Ranoo. However, she managed it and reached the top.

Soon, all three of us were near our car. We decided to climb down. So, we boarded the car and started the descent.

We passed through Narkanda town and headed to Simla. On the way at about 4:30 PM, we stopped at a hotel to have coffee.
